Elementary School Teachers

Schechter Manhattan runs a dual Jewish and General Studies curriculum. In the elementary school, we do not have a separate Jewish and General Studies staff. Instead, there are two co-teachers in each classroom all day who are responsible to share the responsibilities of teaching both Jewish AND General Studies. As such, all K-5 teachers MUST be proficient in Hebrew and have experience with Jewish Studies and texts.

Experience/Background for an Elementary School Teacher:

  • At least 2 years of classroom teaching or pre-service experience required
  • BA, EdM, or MA in education preferred
  • Relative fluency in Hebrew required
  • Training in and/or experience with teaching elementary-aged students
  • Experience teaching a student-centered, hands-on curriculum preferred
  • Interest and willingness to work in a highly collaborative environment

    Substitute Teaching

Would you like to have an opportunity to experience the teaching and community of Schechter Manhattan? You can as a per diem substitute teacher. Read below for more details.

Schechter Manhattan is a student-centered Jewish Day school located in Manhattan. We take a specific educational approach to teaching and learning that ensures our students are actively learning, and engaged in problem solving, critical thinking and building their skills. We work in a professional culture that highlights faculty reflection and collaboration.

Substitute positions are sometimes half-day and sometimes full-day. Elementary substitute teachers generally work alongside one of the classroom co-teachers and support learning in both Jewish and General Studies.

Middle school substitute teachers work on their own in a specific subject area, and follow a lesson plan left behind by the absent teacher.

Pay: $125/full day or $62.50/half-day or less.

Applicants are required to undergo a background check. Once approved, the applicant will be placed on our substitute (sub) teacher list. Subs will be contacted by a teacher or an administrator as far in advance of the teaching as possible. On some occasions, subs may be contacted first thing in the morning for a same day visit.
